No Shit, New Flipper Album 2008 with Novoselic

Lauded hardcore/noise-rock pioneers Flipper have extended their partnership with Krist Novoselic-- the former bassist of some group called Nirvana-- from touring to the recording of a new album, Flipper's first in 15 years, according to a Billboard.com report.

The album is currently untitled, but drummer Steve DePace told Billboard.com that recording is "99% there, if not done. We've got 10 songs, and we just did another round of mixing. The album sounds great. I think it's some of our best work ever. That also is an indicator for more future songs to come. We know we can write songs with Krist now that sound just like Flipper."

Among those new songs are "Be a Good Child", "Night Falls Like Dirt Rocks", and "Triple Mass Murder Suicide", which drew its inspiration from the Virginia Tech shootings, according to the report. Hey, if Nirvana could make "Rape Me" work...

DePace also explained in the interview how Novoselic's 2006 entry into the band came about. After previous bassist Bruno DeSmartass left before Flipper's performance at the Thurston Moore-curated All Tomorrow's Parties, "I chatted with Thurston and told him that I had this idea to contact Krist Novoselic. Thurston called Krist, and he said, 'Absolutely, I'd be honored.'"

The Billboard.com story also mentions a few other Flipper projects scheduled for this year: a possible tour in the spring and summer, a DVD of archival performance footage called Flipper Live: Target Video 1980-81 coming out February 19 via Music Video Distributors, and tentative plans to reissue the band's entire back catalog.

In other Novoselic news, the dude is still political-blogging once a week for Seattle Weekly right here.

We are definitely living in strange times when Flipper gets mentiond on VH1!

avantgarde1 01.05.2008 10:45 PM

Flipper Live: Target Video 1980-81

to me, that is a lot more exciting

My friend's band used to cover Sex Bomb. Their rendition was pretty awful. I would have done Ever.

batreleaser 01.05.2008 11:47 PM

this makes me nervous, lets hope they can go the way of mission of burma and be just as awesome as they once were, and not the way of 90 percent of others once amazing bands and get together for a half assesd reunion. this would bum me out bad flipper is one of my all time favorites

gmku 01.05.2008 11:51 PM

Flipper on VH1... Flipper, Where Are They Now. Or, Flipper... Why We Love the 80s.

This is weirding me out.

StevOK 01.05.2008 11:55 PM

Perhaps all of our favorite bands will get back together. Every last one.

Me too. This album will be mediocre at best. That's my prediction.

gmku 01.05.2008 11:58 PM

Yeah, what was the last one we were supposed to get all excited about? Iggy and the Stooges. Yeah, that turd turned out just dandy, didn't it.

They were. I'm watching the show now. Still, for anyone at Vh1 to have any idea that Flipper still exists is strange.

Please, do enlighten us all with you infinite rock history wisdom, oh sway-ish one.

gmku 01.06.2008 12:08 AM

What did I say?! I meant it as a compliment.

& actually you're right. I only have one Flipper album and it's not even Generic, it's Blowin Chunks, and I didn't buy it until 2006--late in 2006 even! God, am I a loser or what!

gmku 01.06.2008 12:10 AM

definitely, i have a target compilation and they do love canal and nothing, and they are so fucking negative onstage, they are very fucking intense without doing much.

anyway, yeah, it's been how many years since they have recorded an album? 20? plus, will shatter is dead, i don't see them turning a good one here.

SonikJesus 01.07.2008 03:36 PM

Generic Flipper reissue. That's good news.

Everyneurotic 01.07.2008 11:01 PM

yeah, is rick rubin finally going to give the rights back to their old albums?
