Big Stick

any infos on this band

iīve only heard one song, the one from the "Nothing Short Of Total War" compilation.
Devilīs Juicebox

That song kicks major ass, so does the whole compilation

Hip Priest 05.19.2006 04:51 AM

I've got a 12" ep from about 1986 by a band called Big Stick. I'm at work now, but from memory, there are/were two people in the band - a woman called Yanna Trance and a guy whose name escapes me. I think it is on Blast First Records (quite a cool label at the time).

The ep I have has the following tracks:

Shoot the President
Drag Racing
I Look Like Shit

Hell on Earth
Jesus Was Born on an Indian Reservation

They are/were very into the whole drag racing scene. I bought it because John Peel played the final track on the EP, a mighty song. The whole EP is very good in fact, but I never spotted anything else of theirs for sle. I remember buying it then worrying if they were a bit racist, because of the lyrics on one of the songs. But I'm not sure. I hope not. Does anyone know?

toxic johnny 05.19.2006 05:04 AM

As far as I know they're not racist... I'm sure that that Blast First wouldn't have released some of their records if they were... I saw them supporting SY in '86... they are certainly an overlooked treasure from the 80's.

I've been thinking about it. It's from the opening track and the line i something like I'm gonna pull that trigger, gonna shoot that nigger. Obvious scope for racist interpratation.

sonicl 05.19.2006 05:24 AM

They released another single, called "Crack Attack", first a fairly noisy, grungy (in a pre-Nirvana way) version, and then, a year or so later, a cleaned-up version on EMI, with dance mixes and that crap. The earlier version got combined with the Drag Racing 12" on a compilation called Crack 'n' Drag, which, amazingly, is still available through Mute records >>>here<<<.

I hadn't realised they existed beyond that point until I had a look at the website that's linked to in toxic johnny's post.

I've got it on vinyl and CD.
"No program formula for you pal, like it or lump it... so few of the trax on here have been released before that they're not even worth marking... annoying isn't it?" [from the CD notes)

A Thousand Threads 05.19.2006 10:29 AM

it has been released on 4X7", 2X12" and cd or something
i got it on 12" (part one)

A Thousand Threads 11.28.2006 02:57 PM

do you have the vinyl 7" box or the 12" LP ?

pokkeherrie 11.28.2006 07:18 PM

12" LP...
the 7" box is called different (the Devil's Jukebox - after the song) and has a few more songs than the 12" i think.

A Thousand Threads 11.28.2006 07:27 PM

oh, i see,
thatīs why on my copy there is written Part 1.
the second Part is only on the 7"ers, i guess ?

pokkeherrie 11.28.2006 07:31 PM

Your LP says Part 1?
wait, i'll dig out my copy...

edit: where does it say so? my copy doesn't mention it and neither does my cd.

A Thousand Threads 11.28.2006 07:34 PM

yes
on that paper wraped around the sleeve
under "Nothing Short of Total war, where all the artists get mentioned

pokkeherrie 11.28.2006 07:45 PM

I still don't see it... Do you mean the sleeve of the record itself that slides into the gatefold? In my copy that doesn't mention the artists, but just contains the liner notes.

Is your copy the Blast First UK release or the Dutch release on Torso? Mine is the Blast First one and looks exactly like the one here:
http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/comp25.html

edit:
wait, it's says part 1 on my CD copy indeed... but not in my LP copy.

A Thousand Threads 11.28.2006 07:55 PM

i have the one distributed thru Torso, didnīt the Blast first one had that white thing

i mean that white paper wraped around the cover.
now, just look whatīs written under "TOTAL WAR"

sorry, that was hard to explain,
my english isnīt very good

EDIT: i can pull this white paper off of my record
then itīs just the cover like in the pic you posted the link to
didnīt the Blast First come with this?

pokkeherrie 11.28.2006 08:03 PM

i'm not a master in english either, but i believe "they" would just call that the cover...with the thing inside it being the inner-sleeve.

but no, it's not on my copy. my cd copy has that picture you posted as the front cover, the lp cover is just the drawing without the strip ("white thing") in the middle with the artists listed. the inner sleeves just have the liner notes.

anyway, to answer your original question, i haven't heard of a "part two" ever being released...

A Thousand Threads 11.28.2006 08:11 PM

haha, ok.
i thought that "part two" maybe got released with the 7"ers only.
well, could be wrong could be right.
anyway
i think we can agree that itīs a great compilation.

i think that would summarize this topic best in just one sentence... if anyone's feeling too lazy to read the whole thread i suggest they'll just stick to reading this quote only.
