Tortoise or The For Carnation?
 

my vote goes to The For Carnation, even though I hate their grammatically nonsensical name.

seriously, how in the fuck did you even come up with this comparison. tortose vs. godspeed or something would be ok, but the for carnation? what business do they have even being spoken in the same breath as tortoise?

in my book, tortoise rivals SY. they are both amazing.

Yes, you're courageously astute there; each are absolutely boring wankery.

I suppose with Tortoise though, since they have such an expansive collection of sonic hodgepodge and drudgery to pick from, there's bound to be something in there with a measure of likability.

tortoise can be boring at times, and theyve had some shitty records no doubt (s/t, its all around you) but theyve had ablums full of brilliance as well (standards, tnt, millions now living). theyre an extremly talented group of musicians, and they make music that you cant listen to with the prenotion that theyre gonna rock your brains out. you have to listen to their shit closely, and perhaps a few times, to really get a full grip of how great they sound when they are at their best. they do wank at times yes, but so do most ridiculously talented bands, but if you wanna find the brilliance, its there.
