I'd love to get a chance to see this stuff. There's a clip on youtube, and it looks / sounds fantastic.

I think the Glacial core is Lee and David Watson, then it's plus whoever.

cool set, club was ok, the seated table thing is tough for loners like me but I got there early enough to get my spot...Tony Buck just killed on drums, free and powerful, maybe like William Hooker but more on the snare than tom...David Watson played both guitar and bagpipe...Lee mostly played his guitar...I enjoyed the whole set (which was just over an hour) but there were moments of some seriously driven drone that just knocked me out. And I found a wad of cash on the floor on the way out that almost paid for the beer and ticket. I would certainly see more gigs here, but goddamn the music beforehand was painful, chirpy piano versions of blondie and nirvana.

But I think I got the squirts this am from mr goodburger for dinner last night.

Moshe 09.16.2008 09:00 AM

I hope that the nice guys at 3lobed recorded this gig and will release it soon. the teaser they gave us on Lee's CD was great but not enough.

Georgekrz 09.16.2008 09:50 AM

yeah the sound in this place was amazingly good, one of the best sounding shows I've seen in a while, especially the drums. Lighting effects were pretty dramatic as well. After a gig like this I always wonder how much was improv or improv within framework and how much was rehearsed. there were def some themes/movements, I dont know, 5 movements in all??

as for the club it was cool, looks like more of an upscale jazz club than a rock club. some beer on draft was $6 and I guess the food was reasonably priced for what it was, waiters were kind of laid back, so I liked that too. I have to say I had much more fun seeing a show here than at the Stone, which to me can be kind of depressing, I hate to say that but it's true.

blunderbuss 09.16.2008 10:06 AM

Thanks for the reviews, tesla69 and Georgekrz. I envy you madly.

I like the Stone cuz I just go, see some music, and then its done. Often I can show up 5 mins before start time and get a good seat. The lack of air and tight seating makes me claustrophobic though. and its only 10 min walk from my apt is groovy. I don't think of the Stone as "fun" - just a 'serious listening environment'. Thats probably why I'll skip the noho wools sets on Sat, they seem to just be turning into silly performance art.

why all the machine gun cops in the subway this morning?

greenlight 09.16.2008 02:39 PM

yeah, thanks for reviews lads!

wilffiv 09.17.2008 02:17 AM

great gig.. i got to meet lee again afterward, who confirmed that mr ibold will "most likely" be recording with sy..

nels cline was in the audience as well.. i had a quick word with him.... really really nice guy

Speaking of the Stone, USAisamonster this friday? are they gonna get rid of the chairs or what for that show? wonder how that's gonna go down.

From 3 lobed:

--UPCOMING RELEASES--

In other news, after some behind the scenes discussions for a while,
look for a the later portion of 2011 to bring about a double LP
reissue of the Bardo Pond / Tom Carter collaborative records
"4/23/03." This has long been a release that deserves an appearance
on vinyl and we are all going to make up for lost time by also
including some previously unreleased material from the original
recording sessions with this reissue. A couple of other items on the
horizon and still early in the planning stages include the debut album
from the Glacial Trio (Lee Ranaldo on guitars, David Watson on
bagpipes and Tony Buck on drums) and the vinyl debut of the first
Horseback album, "Impale Golden Horn." More details on all of these
upcoming releases when we figure them all out!

hipster_bebop_junkie 05.01.2011 02:32 PM

Great news. Thanks, blunderbuss. I kind of hope Lee's solo record will be out by the end of the year, so this Glacial Trio Lp should add to the joy i'll be feeling, if it actually gets released by then.
