What makes a good Movie?
A good story.
What makes a good story? A good story. Samuel Fuller (1911-1997) ![]() Sam was a genius. I love his work and am inquisitive to know if there are any other diehard fans on the board. Feature films: I Shot Jesse James (1949) The Baron of Arizona (1950) The Steel Helmet (1951) Fixed Bayonets (1951) Park Row (1952) Pickup on South Street (1953) Hell and High Water (1954) House of Bamboo (1955) Run of the Arrow (1957) China Gate (1957) Forty Guns (1957) Verboten! (1958) The Crimson Kimono (1959) Underworld USA (1961) Merrill's Marauders (1962) Shock Corridor (1963) The Naked Kiss (1964) Shark! (1970) [Fuller directed only a part of this film during which a stuntman was killed by a shark, and disowns the credit] The Big Red One (1980) White Dog (1982) Les Voleurs de la nuit (Thieves After Dark) (1984) Street of No Return (1989) http://www.sensesofcinema.com/conten...02/fuller.html |

It's not 100% being a good story, it is also about being a good story teller.

oh fuck i love sam fuller. i have not seen ALL of his films because they are hard to find.
i've watched: shock corridor the naked kiss china gate the big red one and who is the one who made "tigrero"? i think it was aki kaurismaki.... man if you like sam fuller you gotta see this one... it's about the movie he never made... fucking brilliant-- has some of the shots that appeared in shock corridor btw.... --- on a separate note, people tend to give all credit to directors & overlook the directors of cinematography-- the unsung heroes-- |
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to !@#$%! again.
Couldn't agree more... Directors always work in close collaboration with cinematographers... they turn the director's vision into a reality. |

I like these posts guys. Touché Spectral! Those are Sam's own words though. He was just so modest. Thanks !@#$%! for the info on aki kaurismaki. Never heard of it. I'll check it out now. |

oh fuckses. it was not aki but MIKA kaurismaki-- who-- i dont know who that is except for the movie (which im sure you can google) tigrero features jim jarmusch & sam fuller who go back to the jungle where 20 or so years before sam was supposed to have made a movie called "tigrero" w/ john wayne & i forget who else. some of the images he took at the time made it into shock corridor. (you'll recognize them). anyway about the OTHER kaurismaki (aki), he's a genius, hilarious, deadpan, amazing in a very low-budget sort of way. check it out too. ariel leningrad cowboys go america la vide de boheme drifting clouds etc.... (ps just found out mika is aki's older brother-- aki is the one that rules though) --- and i agree with porkmarras for the most part but YOU NEED A GOOD DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY or everything will go to shit (that's what happened to "sideways" in my opinion-- could have been a much better movie if not for the crappy look). |
A good movie requires marketing, special effects, and teenage humor.
|
Mika kaurismaki is younger than I thought.
Tigrero & The Liar looks interesting. I tend to like stuff coming from northern Europe. Lars von Trier is one of my other favs. Thanks! |
