Has anyone read the second dune book?

I want to know if its worth my time..

pbradley 10.24.2008 08:03 PM

Just watch the Sci-fi channel's Children of Dune and then read God Emperor of Dune. That shit is better.

phoenix 10.24.2008 08:06 PM

My sci fi channel is complete bs. Its re runs of buffy and stargate sg1 and not much else :(

pbradley 10.24.2008 08:10 PM

So rent it? God Emperor is the second best book in the series, in my opinion. Leto II just being a divine prick for centuries.

phoenix 10.24.2008 08:13 PM

Movies? Or the book? Its not about the money to buy it, its about whether i'll read it. I'm fussy, and everywhere i read says the second book is meh.

pbradley 10.24.2008 08:18 PM

Rent this to follow the plot: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287839/

^ covers the second and third books

then read this: http://www.amazon.com/God-Emperor-Du.../dp/0441294677

I've read all of the originals series through Chapterhouse. The first four were good but the other two got kinda wordy and boring.

If you liked the first one, you'll probably like the others--more of the same...

It's good. Read it.

I thought the sci-fi channel mini series sucked.

Listen to that guy

Yes Dune Messiah is well worth it, all of Frank Herbert's Dune books are great. My favorite series of all time, I'm kind of a Dune freak. Stay away from Brian Herbert's books though. I've read them and they are baaaaaad.

The only thing I can tell you about Dune Messiah is it will leave you aching to read Children of Dune.

They're written with Kevin J. Anderson aren't they? I read his contributions to the Star Wars expanded universe when I was a kid, utter dreck.

Ugggh yes they are. He wrote " Starcraft " books as well. So rediculous

floatingslowly 10.25.2008 07:02 PM

I liked the first three dune books. After that it, it started to get wonky.

Although I prefer the Lynch adaptation, the SciFiChnl version
Is more true to the story.

So yeah, what Peanut butter said.

phoenix 10.25.2008 07:16 PM

I'm not sure even my ace local video store will have the mini series. :( but second book seems to have plenty of geek vote so i shall give it a go.

You may also want to read National Lampoon's Doon. Its out of print but should be easily available.

Not trying to derail you but as a Dune nerd I have to point out that that phrase isn't in any of the novels.

As far as the Dune movies go, yea I prefer the lynch one although I'm not crazy about it. I think lynch's attempt was close but no cigar. Like you guys said, he left too much stuff out. I really enjoyed his visual interpretations of everything. Except the Bene Jesserits being bald though, wtf was that? Every one of the books describes them as having long dark scraggly witch like hair.

Uggh god, and now ANOTHER Dune remake is set to go into production any day now.

From the director of The Kingdom and Hancock? Does anyone else think that's a horrible choice?
