how do I know if my cat is sick or just craving hugs

This is semi serious question as Ive always been a dog person, only had my cat for about two yrs.

he puked yesterday and he's been talking a lot when it isnt usually his style

but I was sick last week and he was giving me so many hugs and sitting beside meand ON me 24/7(even before I really knew there was anything wrong)

he is here right now upside down on the floor next to me lookin at me while I type this with the 'why yr fingers are on the black plastic thing and not on my belly' type face

he's always been an attention whore, but not this bad

should I take him to the vet? is he sulking because there is something else wrong??

phoenix 10.27.2008 03:21 PM

now he's sitting on me again

terriblecanyons 10.27.2008 03:23 PM

My cats puke almost everyday.
If he becomes lethargic and starts puking multiple times a day, call the vet and ask if it's worth him being taken in.

he's an indoor cat so the only plants he really has access to are cat friendly ones. We do have two semi out-door plants in our sunroom that arent good for cats, but he's always stayed away from them. I dunno what else he could be allergic to? Im worried :(

If you're concerned it doesn't hurt anything but your wallet to bring kitty to the vet. I don't think that anyone here can really tell you if your cat may be sick.

I have a cat, but his personality is very touchy feely all the time. He pukes up a hairball maybe twice a year at the most. And my cat talks to me all the time.

yeh I kind of figured no one would be able to tell me if he actually was sick, I just wondered if a change in mood could signal if he was feeling ill. Since with all my dogs, they just sat on you all the time no matter what and they barked at anything from the tree outside to the table inside. heheh

cats are weird. it could be just that time of the month for him.

then again, male cats are prone to kidney disorders from the food they eat. I had a cat that would get sick, get better and get sick again. it didn't end well.

that said, if in doubt, take him in.

pbradley 10.27.2008 03:56 PM

My cat would only throw up because he would eat too much too quickly. A dim-witted glutton, yes, but my dim-witted glutton.

And then his sister would run into the room as quickly as possible to feast upon the still harm spew.

uhler 10.27.2008 04:03 PM

it could be his food. have you changed the kind of food he/she eats recently? i don't think cats can catch your cold. none of my cats ever did. if your cat is an attention whore and is asking for more attention than he's/she's just being more of an attention whore.

girlgun 10.27.2008 04:05 PM

cats can also tell if you need hugs. maybe that's the case. :)

SYRFox 10.27.2008 04:10 PM

damn i love cats
maybe i'll got one tomorrow
my neighbour's cats (a female cat and his little kitten - he's like one month old) come to my house all the time
cats are adorable

ploesj 10.27.2008 04:11 PM

one of my cats has had a phase where he'd eat too much and then puke... it just passed and he didn't seem to have any other problems. sometimes they do need a bit of attention, especially when they haven't seen you very much in a while, but if you have been cuddling him for a week that shouldn't be a problem. my cats turn into attention whores if i've been away for a weekend, and one is very attached to my mom, he really misses her sometimes (our house is divided in different parts, the cats live in one and the dog in the other one)

anyway you can always call the vet if you're worried, he'll know more about this than the sonic youth forum :-)

I've always worried about this because ever since he was a kitten he has been a big water drinker. BUT, he only eats dry food so he would be drinking more anyway. I've tried to get him on a mix of dry and wet but he just hates the stuff and wont eat it. Even the gourmet cat mince. NOTHING but the 'i can stand here all day until you put the damn dry food back int he bowl cos thats all im eatin' dance and song.

haha my cats are the opposite, they definitely prefer the wet food... but if he drinks enough, he shouldn't be having kidney problems, right?

phoenix 10.27.2008 04:32 PM

thats what the vet said. He gets good quality balanced diet dry food and plenty of water, so he should be fine.

ploesj 10.27.2008 04:36 PM

i wouldn't worry too much then :-)

phoenix 10.27.2008 04:47 PM

hes just so cute I cant help it! hehe

pbradley 10.27.2008 04:48 PM

This thread should just skip to its logical conclusion and post lolcats.
