Black Dice-Repo
I love this record. This is the record I've always wanted Black Dice to make. For the longest time they were just genre jumping way to much to ever really find thier voice. We all loved them back in the days of "Lambs like Fruit" and "Printed Paper" and they were the most ripping hardcore bad making noise around. Then "Beaches and Canyons" came out with its lush and beautiful atmospheric electronics, and it really sounded like some other Black Dice that no one had ever heard before. Of course Pitchfork still referred to it as Noise but that's because they are idiots. I really admired Black Dice for doing "beaches" and I still think its a great record. However, "Creature Comforts" and "Broken Ear Record" did nothing for me, to much genre-bouncing and not enough focus. "Load Blown" did restore some of my faith though, it was an interesting listen.
"Repo" is a whole nother animal though. This is probably what we will consider the "quintessential" Black Dice album as it really is just a culmination of all the various styles they've played around with and utilizing them all to find this sort of master sound. It has elements of the pretty but quirky atmospherics and kraut circular qualties of "B and C", the bouncing techno of the next two records, the drugged out experimentation, and even some of that harsh attitude they were known for in the hardcore days and still shines through live. Like when Olson joined the Wolf Pack, or Rollins joining Black Flag, the sound finally just comes together on this record. It sounds like some too smart for thier own good harsh noise kids who are totally bored with power electronics and idustrial and instead have been ingesting ridiculous amounts of drugs and jamming to early Detroit Techno, minimal synth, big band psychedelic funk, fun drones ala vibracathedral orchestra. I really like this record, Its just so varied and has so much going on. Its good to see Black Dice with this record and bands like Exceptor with "Debt Dept" after the entire decade of the on and off hype that they are finally just saying fuck it, going off the deep end, and making truly strange and unique new tunes. |
I'm not sure if you know what penultimate means, how can we refer to this as their penultimate record? Penultimate means second-to-last in a series. So, unless they're planning on releasing only one more album (which you know won't happen, they are probably going to release 50 more albums), how can we refer to it as their penultimate album?

haha, yeah youre right, sometimes i think of penultimate as being like the quintessential, because every series' penultimate, or second to last episode, is always grandiose and cliff hangers etc.. Just bad english. I really like this record, its really getting my head bobbing. i do some too much weed though, mind you. therefore im more susceptible to be a sucker for this stuff.

im actually considering quitting grass again as i just skipped my once a week 3 hour class for the third time to hit my chillum and watch the shogun assasin.

I'm excited for that one, though I'll wait till the release date when I'll buy it to hear it. Load Blown was actually my favorite Black Dice record, it destroyed my brain. Kokomo and Roll Up are just too good. That rolling sound on Roll Up makes me crazy

I think "manoman" or whatever is one of the best songs ever. They have a lot of stuff I love but this one hasn't connected.
|
ahah, manoman was actually my least favorite track on there. I don't know. I really enjoyed the fact that they made super-groovy tracks (cause they were!) using all those unrelated and harsh samples. It was my favorite 2007 record.
And seriously, this video is genius http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9WSNMKf_Vw |
yeah that video is rad.

Repo is my shit. goin to see BD in June... haven't seen them yet, and Repo slays me, so I am way excited.
|
I honestly think that this one is one of the shittiest records to ever appear on the face of the Earth.

Black Dice is kind of like sodomy for me, i tried a few times and decided it was really shitty. |

haha adam cooley KEEP IT REAL !! |
I'm sure even the members of Black Dice think what they do is hilarious/ridiculous. Why else would they have named an album "broken ear record"?
|
I've heard Repo for the first time today and really enjoyed it
A few boring sections but most of it I thought rocked. Earnings Plus Interest grooves, and Ultra Vomit Craze destroyed my brain. Not as good as Load Blown though, but that's an important record for me (yeah, I know it could sound ridiculous), so I can't really compare. Anyway, really good album. 2009 really is a great year |
bleep bleep blooop
