good albums so far this year?
I'm a little behind the times. What's out there?
|
I think there's already a long thread on this. BUT here's my votes so far, based on things I've actually repeatedly and consistently listened to:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion The Bad Plus & Wendy Lewis - For All I Care Beck - One Foot In The Grave (Deluxe Reissue) Nels Cline - Coward DOOM - Born Like This Minty Fresh Beats - Jaydiohead (mixtape) ...it's been a bit of a slow Q1 in my opinion. But there's some stuff coming on the near horizon that I'm excited about. We'll see. |

That thread is for GREAT, this one's for merely GOOD. Can a bad albums thread be far behind? What about undeservedly hyped? Where can I write about Wavves? |
Albums I really enjoyed so far, in alphabetical order - with a little stylistic description if you don't know the bands :D:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion ([experimental] electro pop - of course!) Bibio - Vignetting The Compost (folk / electronica; though a bit boring sometimes, there's some nice things on there) Black Dice - Repo (experimental / electronic ?) Cercueil - Shoo Straight Shout (french electropop) Clark - Growls Garden EP (electronica; the title track is fantastic) Dälek - Gutter Tactics (hip hop / noise) DOOM - Born Like This (hip hop) Emeralds - What Happened (drone / ambient) Excepter - STREAM 58 (experimental, messy electronic) K-Branding - Facial (noise) Lotus Plaza - The Floodlight Collective (noisy pop) Mi Ami - Watersports (noise rock / tribal etc) Mountains - Choral (folk / ambient) Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian (abstract hip hop ? ;every review I read of it seems to find it meh, but I find it amazing) Psychic Ills - Mirror Eye (psychedelic rock) DJ Signify - Of Cities (instrumental hip hop; really really neat) Telepathe - Dance Mother (electronic pop; yep!) These Are Powers - All Aboard Future (electronic / noise rock) Wavves - Wavvves (lo-fi punk; yep too!) WEAVE! - WEAVE! (punk/funk) WYLD WYZRDZ - Light Upon Light, Wave Upon Wave (folk / ambient; really great stuff, and it's available for free, you should check it) Yagya - Rigning (ambient techno; though those 90's electro sounds can be quite boring) Zu - Carboniferous (noise rock / jazzcore / etc) Oh and by the way, if we had a bad albums thread, the two worst things I've heard this year are the Birdy Nam Nam album (worst album I've heard in a while actually... it has nothing good, it doesn't even make you want to shake your head - which is a shame for a dancefloor techno album) and the Neon Indian EP (though I like the way the vocals sound, I just don't like this kind of MGMT-like pop). |
sonic youth
doom animal collective and hopefully dinosaur jr |
From what I've heard (haven't heard the SY one yet)
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t Wavves - Wavvves Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion and if you're looking for a few cheap laughs The Lonely Island - Incredibad |
|
yeah, the fever ray album is good, though it seems a bit overrated; I mean, it's good, but I don't think it's genius as some say it is. Maybe I haven't listened to it enough. "If I Had A Heart" is really a fantastic track though.

One Foot In The Grave got reissued? Awesome!
|
bat for lashes - Two Suns
Lady Sovereign - jigsaw ulan bator - soleils The Invisible - s/t Pj+Parish Soap & Skin- lovetune for vacuum a bunch more already mentioned |

Well, "genius" may be going a bit far... that's probably why I try to avoid reviews (of films, music, books...) because the "professional" critics always manage to sound like fucking idiots, whether they have good OR bad to say. I actually just discovered the Knife about 6 months ago... and have only heard their Deep Cuts album, and now this Fever Ray release, both of which I love even though they're totally different. I still have to check out Silent Shout. |

bahahahahahahaha |
seriously just listen to this and you shall be fixed.

I ain't no professional critic :D
Green Magnesium : yeah, The Knife rules. And yeah you should really check Silent Shout, it's their best imo (actually I don't like the first ones that much, but Silent Shout is a modern classic). "We Share Our Mothers' Health" is super catchy And by the way, I listened to Fever Ray once more and it's actually even better than I thought it was. So not genius, but really good :D |

If he's a professional critic... then yes ;) And fox, I really have been meaning to scoop up Silent Shout... but it keeps getting put on the back burner in favor of other stuff. Really glad I found Fever Ray though. The PJ Harvey/John Parish is a good one to. Good call, nicfit. |
Thanks for the recommendations. I've checked out a few bands and I really like some of this stuff.
