good midwestern record stores ETC
 

I need a list of good INDEPENDENT style record stores in the midwest that are open to experimental, noise, black metal, out type music. This can also include zine shops and other places.

Mainly looking for more info about Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, also Tennessee.

Most of the good places in Michigan have bit the dust.

Dearborn Music in Dearborn (obviously) is okay. They have some indie/noise/experimental stuff, but I think they're starting to fail. They closed down their other location.

Rock of Ages in Westland really focuses on rock and most genres of metal. I'm sure they have a decent selection of Black Metal.

Some of this info may be outdated--I haven't been back in Michigan in awhile.

Oh yeah, the best place that's still around is Wazoo records in Ann Arbor, MI. Good stuff.

I like Reckless Records in Chicago. Other than that I do everything online.

Glad to see Mpls is still a good record store town.

i also like applause.. for the selection of those itty bitty singles records that i dont know the technical term for because i only dabble in records... but i guess theyre not really independant, eh??

also noise on lake has a pretty good punk selection. but it doesnt limit itself to records.

Extreme Noise is a good shop, volunteer-run and specializing in punk with some metal and other music in there as well. I can't believe I forgot to mention it.

I loved the record stores that were around in my days in Minneapolis. I used to go to one downtown on Hennepin Ave. It was kind of groovy because you go there and buy a record and then the black dudes on the corner would try to sell you pot.

There were also a couple sort of near the lakes on the south side.

Ten or fifteen years ago, that list would have been a lot more impressive. Oh well.

Yes, I know. When I was there 80-83 or so, they were flourishing.

Windy and Carl's store in Dearborn Michigan, Stormy Records, is very good also, and doubtless open to the types of music mentioned here.

I like Reckless in Chicago a lot, and I also really like Permanent Records. Permanent is a small but great store run by some great people.

could someone please tell me what those itty bitty records are called so i can stop calling them 'itty bitty records' and look like a tool.

They're called "7 inch records."

Or, if you want to sound like your gramma, "45s."
They don't all only play at 45 RPM though.

Oh. thats what I had been calling them. but I didn't know if that was right for sure, so I stopped and made myself look stupid.
