I'm already the best at everything I really am interested in doing (mainly sex, playing surf music, and discovering weird movies). I am not quite the best musician or filmmaker yet but I know I will be as long as I work at it. So, I'm not concerned, and I'm not being egotistical here -- everyone should aspire to be the best at something, and the few goals I've set for myself have been achieved, and hopefully, the new goals I am setting for myself will be achieved as well... I'm constantly setting new goals because I hope to achieve those... though, in all reality, maybe I don't want to be the ABSOLUTE BEST at things. First of all, life is too short to be the ABSOLUTE BEST, because someone's always going to be better than you, somewhere. So, when I say "Best", I mean in a relative sense.. the best I could possibly ever WANT TO be. Because, I think while you can get better, even at your supposed "best", eventually you will probably reach a point where you can barely get better. For example, if you can weight lift 200 lbs.. sure, keep pushing, maybe you can weight lift 205 lbs soon but is it really worth it? I think I've excelled at a FEW things to the best of my ability, and I'm not going to be able to do MUCH better than that. Also, besides, I don't think it's too fun to be the ABSOLUTE BEST -- competition breeds creativity. Look at the Madden video games. There used to be 100 different NFL games on the market. Now EA owns the exclusive license (or they did. I don't pay attention to football video games usually). So, Madden doesn't have to innovative anymore; they can keep putting out the same bullshit. If I was the number one filmmaker/musician/etc in the world, I'd probably grow stagnant and have too much pressure to constantly be the best, the best, the best.. instead of focusing on the innovations that got me to that point. You can only innovate so long, too. So, define best... it's hard to define best. Is best an opinion? If I can "Shred" at the guitar better than anyone else -- is that people's OPINION that what I play is awesome.. or am I TECHNICALLY hitting 430983485 "Correct" notes faster than anyone else? So, it's hard to really be the best or to define what "best" even means.
Having said that, one thing I recently grew interested in, and I'd really like to just suddenly be AMAZING at... is chess.
