Parental Advisory

What does it mean?
Is it used for artistic concern?
For commercial concern?
How come most rap records are tagged PA, but almost no records of any other genres are, whatever crude words they use??

yr an idiot.

Sonic Youth 37 08.21.2009 01:41 PM

There is no governing PA body. The record companies themselves label the album with a sticker. With the rise of rap music in white suburbia, WASP parents didn't want their children to be exposed to all the obscenity. With is pointless, because edited rap albums are 25-50% blank.

dirty bunny 08.21.2009 01:45 PM

I think it started with 2LiveCrew. And yeah, it has to do with swear words and obscenity. Before rap music there really weren't that many albums that used swear words that frequently, so I guess people let it slide.

I can remeber when the GnR use yr issusion discs came out. They were labled as such. I had to get my mom to but them for me cause I was only 13.

Rob Instigator 08.21.2009 01:55 PM

noisereductions 08.21.2009 02:33 PM

Rob, have you ever seen the "round table" discussion with Zappa about "pornography" in music?? Search for it on youtube. I forget the name of the show or the host, but it's amazing.

by the way, what I'd really like to do is list as many awesome NON HIP HOP albums that feature the parental advisory sticker to point out what dbag gaulbert is.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Nirvana - Incesticide
Smashing Pumpkins - Rotten Apples
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Madonna - Erotica

keep em coming please

godsfavoritedog 08.21.2009 02:36 PM

Didn't all that crap start because of "Darling Nikki"?

noisereductions 08.21.2009 02:40 PM

"Darling Nikki" is great. Which reminds me, several Prince albums have PA stickers.

The Symbol Album?
Come?
Emancipation?

(going by memory here)

1. Xtina has a great voice.

2. Yes they both were. Actual STICKERS though, not drawn on the artwork itself.
