art now
Living artists doing their thang right now ... who interests you?
Here's a couple from Hazel Dooney's Dangerous Career Babes series. Hazel's blog is a good read. She's sharp, smart and writes well. http://www.hazeldooney.blogspot.com/ ![]() ![]() |
way too many.
to be honest I really shy away from up and coming's, mostly because a lot of them tend to be flavours of the week, all in the same cool theme of work, and either flop around with what they are doing too much for my tastes, or just don't stick with it. Sometimes I'll write down names where people are doing things that I really find interesting, and look them up in a year or two. Personally it really fucks with my creative process when I spend too much time around people who are all producing the same thing, or any one person who has a particularly strong style. I'm easily distracted and end up noticing things coming up in my work that would not have otherwise. Which bugs me. I'll look back on a month and it will be tainted with ideas or styles that are so far from what I know to be my own true concepts or styles.. and I throw a lot out. There are lots of living artists I follow who aren't young though. In art I respect dedication a lot more than over famous types or one offs. Not that all the people whose art I enjoy are uknown. hm. |
where are you from btw?
|
my favorite died.
ai kijima is a living artist that i know of in new york city. she makes weird psychedelic collages out of sheets. they look cooler in person. ![]() ![]() ![]() and obviously richard prince. |

Gold Coast, Australia. You make some good points. The flavour-of-the-month effect pisses me off, but sometimes I'm surprised when I dig a bit deeper. The internet and blogs give artists such as Hazel a chance to by-pass middlemen and galleries. She loathes them. I'd like to check out the art at Burning Man. Or has it grown too big for it's boots? |
Those kijimas are cool, Satan. Luv em

hey, Im from Melbourne. I miss Brisbane a lot. Haven't been to the Gold Coast tho.. and.. maybe. I don't know. I've read a lot of 'the first I went was the last time it was any good'.. no matter what year that was. I doubt I'll ever be put off going. ( it was going to be this year but I literally have no money right now and haven't for the last 6 months, aside from just managing to feed myself and pay most of my bills.. so it didn't happen.) Right now I plan on being there next year, but that's what I planned this time last year. eh. Even though it's a very do whatever you like deal, I'd much prefer to be involved as an artist/part of one of the set ups/volunteer than just a visitor, but I wouldn't not go if I couldn't be part of it. |
Yeah, Brissie has a good live music scene now. Plenty of venues, something worth seeing every weekend. GOMA opened at Brisbane's South Bank two years ago ... Australia's largest modern art gallery. It's had some good shows, Warhol being a highlight.
I haven't been to Melbourne in ages, but I'm keen to see the Pixies in Bris, Syd and Melb when they tour in March. Here's a longtime fave of mine. Jeffrey Smart. He's in his late 80s. ![]() ![]() |
I used to really not get his work, but over time it's grown on me. some of the compositions are amazing.
.. we are naming all australians. which is okay as I don't often get to talk about them on international forums. (oh crap, apparently james gleeson died in october last year :( .. there goes my hopes of getting a painting at under 50k now.. ) james gleeson WAS probably my favourite oz living artist. He blows my mind. The earlier semi porno stuff doesn't hit me, but since he gave up on including his dream dude in every painting, they are epic. If I had money I would buy a lot of them. ![]() ![]() |
Man, I really like those. Reminds me of that artist that did all those covers for Yes.
Yes, that is a good thing. |
that first gleeson is wicked.
OK, moving away from Oz. Cody Hudson... ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The second one is pretty good.

I love Banksy. Probably my favorite artist in the past few decades.

I dont think I know this artist.. or at least not these works. eh. It's alright, not totally interesting to me though. banksy is getting boring now. Well, the pop culture of banksy is getting boring. If I were him I'd retire it and start anew. Is the chimp definately a banksy stencil? There is another guy who I cannot think of, he does crazy multi layer stencils. I'm pretty sure he gets the laser cut though. Still awesome. |
found him.. and its not laser cut, he hand cuts. his name is logan hicks.
