Avril Lavigne - What The Hell? - 2011

I'm not sure if I like it so much (yet), but I'm still very excited for Goodbye Lullaby. I trust that this album will be just a gem-ridden as her others.

It's already growing on me. Still not as good as anything off of Let Go, except for Sk8r Boi - which sucks.

Sounds like her voice is dropping (as is natural) - she's got a LOT thicker around the lower end of her register, getting into contralto (rather than her normal mezzosoprano).

Song's good as well, but sounds like the sort of thing I'll enjoy in the context of an album - like the Best Damn Thing singles.

Incidentally, Under my Skin was her best album, as well as being one of the best albums of the 00s, for me.

Up until the chorus kicked in I thought it was a pretty ordinary Girlfriend retread but that chorus ... It strikes in two phases. Skillz!

Yeah, I noticed she sounded a bit different this time around; my realization was void of such fancy-shmancy tech terms, of course. I just wish her first single would have been more of a rock tune, something with a little guitar in it. Not only do I find that style more suiting to her talents, but I think it would've been a refreshing distinction from the rest of today's modern hits. This song sounds extremely Katy Perry to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it would've been nice had it been more unique. But then again, it did reach #3 on iTunes within the first day that it was uploaded... so what do I know?

Not so sure about the Perry thing. She's not quite into that poppy rnb territory yet, thankfully. Listening now though, it is a bit third-album Kelly Clarkson. Which is odd, because that album was awful. Maybe Avril's just got the voice to carry it.

too much product placement in the vid, a bit too annoying, it's not like she's a "new act" needing support from (big or not) brands... And I hate the lalalala parts..

Product placement is how the industry is recouping money now, isn't it? It's all over loads of videos now. Thanks to youtube, they can get past the product placement filters on most TV channels, you see?

Yes, I think it's an "industry standard" nowadays, quite sadly (even in big budget movies).
In avril's there's lots of sony, Abbey Dawn, etc etc, even more "obvious" than that britney one.
I have no tv (and frankly I don't miss it at all), I'm a bit out of the loop with pop vids and such, so I can't really have a, say, 30 mins session of vids to check how the newest are, in general. Perhaps I should reconnect with the tv world. Could be useful for some purposes...

I'm a big fan of the lalala in general. I'm also a big fan of Nananas as well. It's a well deployed lalala, if you ask me.

I wasn't that offended by the product placement in the Avril video because it's genuinely subtle by comparison to this (which also happens to be awesome).
