There's a very large woman who sings lilting Irish folk songs and other tunes from a lawn chair near my office building from 10 to 5, but only in cold months! She sits out there all bundled up and sings these songs for money. It's both annoying and sad. Sometimes I wish she'd just shut up.

kind of similar: in the hotel i stayed during my holidays this year there was this female singer who'd perform every afternoon for an unintressed bunch of people eating cookies. we called her 'chanteuse en rêvant d'une carrière' (singer dreaming of a career)

There's also a young street urchin who says the oddest thing when she's panhandling: "Sir, excuse me, could you spare some change for a dollar?"

I think she means she wants spare change, like a dollar's worth. But it sounds like, "Will you give me spare change if I give you a dollar?"

Very strange. In the pouring rain. Penny Lane is in my ears...
