RIP Lumet
From 12 Angry Men (masterpiece) to Before the Devil Knows Your Dead (masterpiece). Plus a bunch of masterpieces inbetween.

Yes, already tweeted (yes I tweet, sorry) about this. "Serpico", "Dog Day Afternoon", "Network" (even though I still feel Peter Finch beating DeNiro was a snub) and "Before the Devil Knows you're Dead" are all amazing, repeat-viewing films.
I have often heard of Lumet being described as an "actor's director" and I couldn't agree more. Pacino was incredible as Michael Corleone, but did he ever shine more than he did in Dog Day? I doubt it. Being able to bring out Pacino's intensity while keeping him grounded enough to not let the performance become over the top in a bad way (as in parts of "Heat" and a slew of others movies). Or Ethan Hawke in "Before the Devil...", I've never thought much of Hawke yknow. Never thought he was terrible or scene-stealing, but holy shit is he perfect in that movie. I'm sort of ashamed to say I've never seen "12 Angry Men" but I will definitely make time for it in the near future. |
I know Entertainment Weekly is supposed to be lame, but I thought this was a great article:

R.I.P. Dog Day Afternoon is a classic.
Sadly, I haven't seen anything else of his. Equus sounds pretty interesting though. |
before the devil knows your dead is great.
Ive never seen dog day actually...maybe I should. |
^ Dog Day After is pretty good. Got it on DVD

it's fucking great. probably his best movie. fucking shit. alright, he was 86. meaning he made before the devil knows you're dead (not the dead that belong to you) in his fucking 80s. nice. |
