On a more serious note, in response to your predicament, and despite the fact that I'm probably saying the same thing everyone else has told you, I'm going to go ahead and say that you just straight up tell him.

My sophomore year of college, I had a huge thing for a girl, there was something metaphysical about it, how the whole thing worked eldues me to this day, but anyway I told her and she said "no, thanks" and that was that. Well, actually, I was more miserable than before, but I got over it quickly.
