Artist X Says About Artist X
Prince on Michael Jackson:
"Michael [Jackson] and I both came along at a time when there was nothing. MTV*didn't have anyone who was visual. Bowie, maybe. A lot of people made great*records, but dressed like they were going to the supermarket." |
Morrissey on Prince:
"If he lived in Wigan he'd be dead by now" |
Lou Reed on Jimi Hendrix

Here's something about Nico in the book"Linda McCartney,A Portrait"byDanny Fields
''Morrissey was,to his infinite credit,Nico's main protector[actually her manager, but that's too impersonal a definition of their relationship]when it came to dealing with the real world. In September 1968,he had just arrived in London with Warhol when Paul McCartney called him at his hotel and said,to Morrissey's astonishment,"Hello,it's Paul.Listen,I have a favor to ask of you.Could you come over to my house?" "I didn't know what he wanted, until he said it was about Nico.I knew she was in London, but not until that moment did I have any idea that she was staying at Paul McCartney's house."Morrissey remembers."So,I went over there, and he showed me the house, and then he said "You know,I have Nico here,I invited her to stay here about two weeks ago;she had no money and I just thought it was for a few days, and she had nowhere else to go.I like her and she's very nice but I have to ask her to leave and I don't know how to do this, and I thought that since you're here, and you're her manager, maybe you could do that." Although not in love with her,Paul seems to have been slightly scared of Nico, like all the other young men in her life.Let's say"shy with"rather than "scared of". |
STAR QUESTION
Lydon is an absolute hero of mine - when are we going to record something together? Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth Ah, Sonic Youth, what a great band, I love 'em. Remind me a lot of PiL, the spontaneity, the fact that they seem to rehearse on stage, take chances, never play the same way twice. I dunno Thurston, there was a time, maybe a few years back, when I might have been up for it. Maybe I will be soon. It's got to be the right time, right song, right attitude, right vibe, and it's the planning that goes on in this industry that kills off all those things. All my collaborations have been incredibly spontaneous - the work with Afrika Bambaataa and Leftfield were just right for the moment. |

NME: If I put you in a room with Robert Smith, Mark E. Smith and a loaded Smith and Wesson, who would bite the bullet first?
Moz: I'd line them up so that one bullet penetrated both simultaneously (chuckle). Mark E. Smith despises me and has said hateful things about me, all untrue. Robert Smith is a whingebag. It's rather curious that he began wearing beads at the emergence of The Smiths and (eyes narrowing) has been photographed with flowers. I expect he's quite supportive of what we do, but I've never liked The Cure... not even "The Caterpillar". |

Ian McCulloch on Bono:
(On his first encounter with Bono, before appearing on the same TV show): "Bono is penguining around the studio, wearing his big Orson Welles hat and these ridiculous Cuban heels. So then he sidles right up to me and says, 'It's great that we're both on the show. You know what it means? We're going to change the whole word. This is our mission, y'know.' And I'm thinking, 'See ya later, Fatso.' Not that he was fat exactly. But he was a squatty little turd. And I thought, 'What the hell's he going on about anyway? We've just got nothing at all to do with what he's doing." "Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat." "If I saw Bono walking down the street, I would just think he was one of the worst-dressed men I'd ever seen." |
Quote:
ROTFLOL. That is so fuckin funny. |
"Cobain had the wounded-junkie look that for some reason women watching MTV think is really cool. I’ve said this before: If Kurt Cobain looked like Fat Albert—same songs, everything—it wouldn’t have worked. Same with Soundgarden. If Chris Cornell looked like Fat Albert, a 500-pound black guy, nobody would have given a shit."
- Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, in the upcoming book Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge |
Courtney Love on Dave Grohl
"As for that drummer, well, he's hit on me so many times. He's just a very very conflicted guy about me, which is why he continually writes songs about me to hear he 'hates' me more than 'anyone else.' Kurt loathed HIM more than anyone else (except a journalist) ... He's just sub-mediocre kind of [guy] who does this 'nice guy' nonsense." Elvis Costello on Morrissey "Morrissey writes wonderful song titles, but sadly he often forgets to write the song." Anton Newcombe on Eric Clapton “People talk about Eric Clapton. What has he ever done except throw his baby off a fuckin’ ledge and write a song about it?” |
