So I was on the Sonic Youth discussion board

I love the way Americans sometimes start a story with, "So I was..."

No sarcasm intended.

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 04:13 PM

we do say that. i have a nasty habit of saying "uh" in the middle of all my sentences too.

gmku 10.05.2006 04:14 PM

How do you Brits start a story, wot?

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 04:16 PM

innit

Pookie 10.05.2006 04:16 PM

We say 'Excuse me, but would you mind awfully listening to my amusing tale'.

Hip Priest 10.05.2006 04:19 PM

"I say, now here's a thing: I was perusing the Sonic Youth forum...."

touch me i'm sick 10.05.2006 04:50 PM

before i ask a question no matter what it is. i go "wait a minute"

golden child 10.05.2006 04:58 PM

It's what happens if you post from work. Always in a bad mood at work.

I'm much nicer when I post in the evening.

jon boy 03.27.2007 07:42 AM

pookie, in a bad mood? your the eternal optimist. maybe you really do hate christmas?

I think there's a difference between writing and talking. If we all wrote the way we talked, we'd constantly be saying um and ah.

I'm always in a bad mood at work.

We spend the majority of our waking hours doing something we don't want to do, and being with people we don't want to be with.

Other than work, I love my life (and I love Christmas).

But surely you'd expect people to cut out those parts of the spoken language we use which are superfluous, and just inserted because of lack of confidence, lack of articulacy, or because we're afraid of silence?

It's all relative really. I'd much rather be with my family and friends.

Then again, I don't dread going to work each morning, the way I have with some jobs I've had.

Two of those things apply to me.

jon boy 03.27.2007 08:14 AM

murdering tory!

which two?

jon boy 03.27.2007 08:19 AM

ok i will admit that yes i am generally not in my best moods when i am at work. i generally dont like the people i work with and its strange to think that such a random group of people are thrown together and have to try and get along.

they also say that a lot of people find their love at work. i dont really think thats possible for me unless i am willing to make some major changes in my life. i am sat in the marriage chair apparantly. everyone who sits here ends up getting married apparantly.
