Edward Burtynsky

Canadian photographer who takes pictures mostly of nature transformed by human industry. Perhaps some of you know who he is? There is a new film documenting his work. I stumbled onto some of his stuff, and I'm bored, and wanted to share.

Neat:

Wire Yard

Plastic Toy Parts

Chinese 'recycling'.

ah, cool thread.

i don't know him, but he reminds me somewhat of this guy:
http://www.chrisjordan.com/
who has made some interesting series about the waste resulting from mass consumption:

cars

mobile phones

more stuff here:

be sure to check out his post-Katrina pictures:

The recycling photos answer some questions about just what happens to electronics after they are obsolete. Fascinating, and disturbing.

This is how humans interact with the landscape.

Fantastic. I think human industry makes for great photographs. I especially like no's 5 and 6. Thanks.

Once again, 56 crosses my path.

I agree Hipster, I've been moved to buy Mr. Burtynsky's book, complied from his trip to China.

You reminded me of a film quote, which I'll try to recall accurately:

Hold on Max. You have to slow down - you're losing it, you have to take a breath. Listen to yourself; You're connecting a computer bug I had with a computer bug you might have had and some religious hogwash. You want to find the number 216 in the world, you will be able to find it everywhere; 216 steps from a mere street corner to your front door, 216 seconds you spend riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere. But Max, once you discard scientific rigour, you're no longer a mathematician...you're a numerologist!

I'm more on Max's side, to be frank, and think you should keep spotting the 'coincidences'. But I like the quote.

The hardest part is distinguishing if 56 means something, or if its all in my head. Noticing the number is the easy part!

These are way out of this world:

How many liters of fossil fuel do you need to wear of all those tyres?!!

Hip Priest 10.13.2006 07:11 PM

That first photograph with the thousands of tyres; when it goes into the distance, and they look less like tyres, they remind me of the film Aliens, all that stuff along the walls.
