Seeing this

has made me dig into his surprisingly extensive catalogue. I'm starting to think he's something of a genius. I'm still not sure. I'll keep you posted.

And there was me thinking he was a shit 80s pop star.

This is areally cool album - sits in the heads space well

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replicas_(album)

most of these are really cool songs - they sound really weird but at the same time are groovy pop - not so enthused about later stuff. I was a huge fan of Cars when that was a mild hit in the states, as usual everyone said I was weird. (also for listening to other obscure bands at the time like B-52s, Talking Heads, Police, even early Depeche Mode)
  1. "Me! I Disconnect from You" – 3:23
  2. "Are 'Friends' Electric?" – 5:25
  3. "The Machman" – 3:08
  4. "Praying to the Aliens" – 4:00
  5. "Down in the Park" – 4:24
  6. "You Are in My Vision" – 3:15
  7. "Replicas" – 5:01
  8. "It Must Have Been Years" – 4:02
  9. "When the Machines Rock" – 3:15
  10. "I Nearly Married a Human" – 6:31

I know he's very prolific and that his "one hit" is not representative of his work as a whole, but I haven't heard enough to judge.

I guess I've always thought of him as kind of a poppier 80's version of Trent Reznor. But Numan came first so I guess that means Trent is a 90's Gary Numan. :)

The Pleasure Principle LP was one of my birthday presents when I turned 11.

VERY COOL! Thanks!

I'm still not sure if he's a genius, but he is seriously underrated. I mean, 16 or so albums since Pleasure Principle, and none that I've heard so far completely suck.

Plus, even though I don't care much about hip-hop, the fact that black kids in Brooklyn used to breakdance to Gary Numan backintheday is mighty impressive.
