So I know there are a few enthusiats of Bill Hicks' brand of comedy. Well Friday night one of the guests on Friday's David Letterman show will be Bill Hick's mom. Along with that Letterman will finally air a never before shown performance of Hicks's final appearance on his show back in 1994 which at the time was considered un-airable.

I don't find him funny at all. He's like the Andrew Dice Clay of the educated.

all things?
Tool rules! |

Thank you. I now know that I'm not alone in thinking just that. |

He wasn't about being funny, he was about giving people the ugly truth about this country, the people that inhabit it, philosophic ideals, etc. He was about waking people up. Getting in their face, if they ever did choose to come see his show, he would put everything out on a limb just to make you see the reality in which we live. The angry humor just went along w/ that. |

Tool isn't the only fucking band to make Bill Hicks references. Anybody remember Fugazi's, Steady Diet of Nothing, that's a Bill Hicks joke reference. Fila Brazillia mclusky Radiohead They've all had albums referencing Bill. |

That's one of the reasons why Hicks annoys me: thinking he's waking people up, 'enlightening them', by making loads of obvious points about the media, right-wing politics, religion, etc: the usual pseudo-radical horseshit. You may as well say every Guardian columnist ever is a genius and a prophet - and they don't make shit jokes about smoking weed or do the Goatboy routine too. |
Right. And it may be valid to say that he was more justifiable while he was alive--I'm not sure how much of his humor has become standard because of him, but it wasn't that long ago, and there's nothing left in it now. It's old, overdone, and trying-too-hard-to-be-in-your-face.
I remember seeing some joke where he kept saying, "I'm serious. I'm not joking. Stop laughing, this isn't a joke." And it was a joke, but he went on like that forever. I get the point, but I don't think it's clever. I feel the same way about the original SNL cast. I'm sure they were funny back then, but I can't even force a laugh from where I'm at. Biased or not, I can't really see it. |

Yeah, I knew that (well, I don't know who FILA BRAZILLIA is). But Tool is the only band that makes Bill Hicks references that most people on here would go "ah fuck dat band their fanz r moronz". So, again.. TOOL RULES!!!!!! |
Bill Hicks is cool but I prefer Lenny Bruce's long rants about court.

That's my entire opinion on them. |
Aenima is one of the best albums of all time. All time.

they are my next fav band after sy |
Finally, someone with taste!

Fila Brazillia is more of an electronic group than a band, but the album Maim That Tune has a Bill excerpt in there that's classic. Anyway, I definitely think Tool is one of those love them, or hate them bands, I'm on the lovers side. Although, I agree w/ what was stated before, that Keenan is an ass, but that's personal opinion. & yes Aenima is their masterpiece. I'll also agree w/ the fact that Lenny Bruce revolutionized this type of genre (stand-up comedy/ranting/semantics). |
Ive never listened to Tool but the minute i heard "The Metal Radiohead" my irrational aversion gained a higher level of truth.
As for Bill Hicks himself, he was very good, mainly i think because of the fact he was probably the most empathetic comedian there was. He knew that to be aloof and preachy was the path to downfall, thats why i disagree with the "oh he just harped on about liberal ideas" crowd, he was a comedian first |
