What was your first favorite SY song?
Although it was not the first song I heard by the band, the first song that I listened to and thought "Yeah, this is my favorite SY tune" was "Hey Joni."
It just blew me away. Most of my friends thought it was the most filler song on DDN, but I thought it sounded like a torrential downpour. It was furious and fast and the harmonics created such a strong sense of atmosphere!! It was incredible from the first note!! later on, of course, I heard more, and thought about things more. Now I know I can't name a single favorite among so many brilliant songs. But "Hey Joni" was my *official* favorite SY song for several years. I'd still put it in a top ten 6 out of 7 days of the week. |
I dont think i really "got it" until i bought Evol and heard Shadow of a Doubt. Id got DDN first but wasnt impressed, then couldnt latch on to anything in Confusion is sex, but it all made sense after shadow of a doubt.

When I saw "Dirty Boots" on Beavis + Butthead. '94-'95ish.

one of my favorites on GOO. While I think that album isn't very impressive as a whole, it's a lot of fun to listen to every so often. Dirty Boots, Tunic, Kool Thing, Disappearer, Mote, Cinderellas Big Score (!), Mildred Pierce... great collection of songs. But then you have the crap like my friend goo and mary christ.... anyways, I've mentioned before that the song "Bull in the Heather" initially made me feel obliged to dig deeper into their discography. As mentioned above, Confusion is Sex is the most difficult to understand at first. Overcoming the first few listens was very rewarding for me though :o |
Youth against Fascism video on either Alternative Nation or 120 Minutes. MTV Europe, 1993.

Dirty Boots. When I listened Goo in the record shop maybe half year after itīs release, it really hit me for the first moment! The first song Iīve heard is Teenage Riot and that didnīt hit me at the moment.

The Burning Spear after checking out sonic youth for the first time, so I thought that I should start with the first album.
I fell in love. |
Probably Sugar Kane on 120minutes way back. It was the first time i heard any of their songs. Then i got Dirty from my local library and never looked back. I was facinated by that album. Theresas Sound World had a big impact too, as did Orange Rolls. And 100%

Becuz, stiill is my fave SY song + alltime fave song by any band in fact.
|
I bought my first SY album because their name was mentioned on a Lydia Lunch double.
I hadn't heard anything from them then. So my first favorite was a song from Bad Moon. And it was I'm Insane. |
Shadow of a doubt forever and ever, yo

World Looks Red, I think, from the "You Bet We've Got Something Against You" compilation.

She's In A Bad Mood, after getting the reissued Confusion Is Sex. About the same time I read an interview with Michael Stipe saying that the impact of hearing Horses by Patti Smith for the first time made him feel like piano had fallen on his head, well, that's how Confusion Is Sex felt to my 15 year old ears.

maybe total trash...i love the noise progession, but live that song loose that noisy dynamic.
|
Dirty Boots, my dad had Goo on LP. I remember putting it on and loving it.
