The Smiths' music, and Morissey's regular and fascinating interviews in Smash Hits, where a big part of my teenage years.

May I be so bold as to insert a link to my old Best Smiths LP poll?

the greatest lyrics i have ever read and possibly for the wrong reasons.
It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were virtually dead
And they were so wrong

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were easily led
And they were half-right
Oh, they ... oh, they were half-right, oh

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
It's time that the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Oh, reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Ah ... oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... oh, I do
Oh ...

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said
Two lumps, please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I

Oh, meet me at the fountain
Shove me on the patio
I'll take it slowly
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, no, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... I do
Oh, I do
Oh, I do
Oh, I do

ha ha, well, i certainly harbor no ill will to smiths fans. just wait a bit and cheeto/robinstigator is bound to show up here at any moment and proclaim his love of the smiths. i have a novelist friend who worshhipped morrisey as some kind of XX century oscar wilde (i suspect he borrowed that opinion somewhere, but still). i just don't-- i don't know, i just--who knows? i don't know. :D

Yes. That's the thing about The Smiths. It's the lyrics. The music can be good, but it can be background almost sometimes. The music is never bad though; it suits the sound. Morrissey writes poetry. Period. He then adapts the poetry to songform by using the device of repetition when needed.

One day this world will miss Moz.

Time's tide will smother you may be my favourite bit of Smiths lyric.

And that trick doesn't work unless your poetry is really, really great.

My love for this band is on a par as Sonic Youth.

Jico 11.16.2006 07:27 PM

ha ha. gay covers.

Hip Priest 11.16.2006 07:28 PM

One strange thing about The Smiths, for me anyway, is that of all the music I bought in the eighties, The Smiths are the one artist that I've never bought on CD. They just seem to suit vinyl too well.

All men have secrets and here is mine
So let it be known
We have been through hell and high tide
I can surely rely on you ...

The first Smiths song I heard was What Difference Does it Make. I loved the tune (one of the best/most memorable intros ever). The lyrics made me almost fall in love with them instantly.
