Bummer.

But, hey, people die all the time. He was in a bad way, wasn't he, near the end?

jon boy 11.21.2006 11:58 AM

i have no idea. he was quite old.

he made some great films though, the player and shortcuts etc.

atari 2600 11.21.2006 11:59 AM

He was always quite drunk too it is said.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller is a great movie.
Vincent & Theo is good, and The Player is okay.

That's about all I can really praise Altman's work.

81 though, wow.

LittlePuppetBoy 11.21.2006 12:24 PM

damn. Now my grandfather has outlived tons of people (he is 96)

luxinterior 11.21.2006 12:42 PM

MASH is great, of course. Nashville is wonderful.

gmku 11.21.2006 12:48 PM

I was never an Altman fan. Kubrick meant much more to me.

Tokolosh 11.21.2006 01:36 PM

Haven't seen most of his films. Mash was good and Popeye was poor but funny when I was a kid. Robin Williams played the spinach sailor very well.

chocolate, vanilla, it's all ice cream and it's all good.

i recently watched "gosford park" and loved it. altman was a really really important director. sure i like kubrick a lot more. but altman did a lot i think for ensemble movies and character-driven pieces, so he was more of an actor's director, while kubrick had the soul of a cinematographer above all else. anyway, what was the story... oh shit, i'm sad altman has died, but that was a decent career he had. oh, i saw "brewster mccloud" some years ago and that was one weird movie! i loved it.

Aaaah Fuck... this is really sad news.

Nashville is one of my all time favourite movies... I got to see it on the big screen as a special treat at the National Film Theatre for my birthday 2 years ago and it was breathtaking. Apparently his last movie 'A Prairie Home Companion' is a return to his 70's style of filmmaking which is a very exciting prospect. It hasn't had a cinema release in Britain yet so I'll just have to wait and see... RIP Robert.
