actually... i was just talking to Jonathan and part of his job involves participating in a series of boards (mostly to do with social sciences, culture and adaptation nothing to do with music) and he said ALL of them have had recent discussions from women who were the minority and were being scared away by misogynist posting.

He told me the ratio is like 85% men (even tho those are SERIOUS boards) and their usual solution is to ban the woman that complains about it.

so I agree with the music guitar thing, but that's not just it.
