Dragon Warrior IV for the NES (A remastered version came out not too long ago on the DS) is my favorite DW/DQ game. There is leveling up involved, but when you level up you are on top of the world. The leveling up sound is an angel in my ear. I grew up so frustrated with that game that when I finally beat it I dorkingly feel like I accomplished something. I suggest downloading the ROM and playing the first chapter or two Mecha. (All of the NES versions are way too expensive and most of the save batteries are long dead)

And I did notice how frequent the random battles are in FFIV compared to other RPGs. The worst to me was Earthbound Zero.... You sometimes would change the direction you're facing and you encountered a battle. And since you only have Ninten for a while, the battles are literally "I attack you, you attack me, repeat, heal afterwards". I'm glad Earthbound changed the format around.
