I'm curious, how do 180mph cyclones routinely hit pacific rim countries with relatively little damage and loss of life, and yet category 3/4 hurricanes on the East Coast (like Hurricane Andrew or Katrina or Ivan) with significantly slower winds cause apocalyptic damage. Is there a fundamental difference between cyclones and hurricanes I am not getting?
