Australia's building standards are apparently fairly high in the world standings. The cyclone cut in between high population points and went straight through but destroyed alot still. Where the cyclone hit (the big one, there has been 5 in the last month) people have to build by cyclone safe standards. The houses may be still standing but the towns are smashed by the floods that have followed the cyclones.

Is there a fundamental difference between cyclones and hurricanes I am not getting?
