Gaga is
utterly fashionista. Most of her early breaks were Milan catwalks. She's entirely stitched into the fashion world now. Nearly everyone cares about the packaging of the music they buy, whether it's VU-chic or '[we want to look like] we don't care about fashion'. It's a big deal. Gaga has, to use loathsome terms, probably the strongest visual brand of any pop star doing the rounds at the moment, which is again why it's so surprising.
The music, meanwhile, is primarily aimed at the sort of people who like good pop music - ie, people like me.
