I would totally let Volkswagen use one of my songs (not that they would).
I have no problem taking that kind of cash from a huge company, and as long as I had no big problems with their products or ethics, who cares?
Writing jingles is another story. I would not do that in a million years. But to have someone pay you oodles of cash for existing art? No problem.
Fuckin' a; people think they shouldn't have to pay for albums anymore, so you can't make a decent living that way, people complain about even the most moderately priced gigs, so it's hard that way...there is nothing wrong with taking money for your art. Especially if you have no problem with the company.
Low turned down 50 grand from a Japanese beer company early on in their career (when they really could have used it), but went ahead and let the Gap use their version of Little Drummer Boy in one of their holiday ads. I have no problem with this, and was glad to see a good band with good folks in it getting some decent monetary compensation.
Yeesh.
