Though my favorite joints are The Flat Iron, which you may have already heard of it, but it's on North/Milwaukee/Damen. Two blocks down is Emporium which is a bar/arcade. Not as nerdy as one would think.

THEN! random bar/small venue is the Hungry Brain near Belmont and Western. Nice cozy place.

Venues, Empty Bottle. Go there as soon as you have a chance. Saw lots of bands there(Shonen Knife, Times New Viking, Lightning Bolt, and a lot more)

The Vic. MY FAVORITE. Saw Sonic Youth, the vines, and then some here.

Bottom Luonge is pretty cool...

Subterranean....is awesome. It's like a narrow place, but still great place to see live music.

These places are cool because their beer prices aren't stupid ridiculous like 7 bucks for a 10oz cup of beer.

It's a bit rushed. I'm at work.

I live like a two minute walk from HUngry Brain....yeah, man. Sunday and Monday nights free-free jazz shows. Seen some interesting stuff there.

thanks for the list!!!! getting ready for work, talk soon
