Not surprised and he definitely deserves it. No disrespect to Neuer but I reckon it'd have to be a very mediocre year for outfield players before a goalkeeper ever wins it.

I agree. although if you're talking about other defensive midfielders, you can only compare him with those (like De Jong) who function purely in the 'destroyer' role, rather than those (like Busquets) who've edged it into more 'creative' territory. What players like Mascherano and De Jong do seems very unfashionable now, as the vogue is for more multi-dimensional players, especially in the defensive midfield role, but I think they're still vital and would rank Mascherano at the very top of his field.
Never a candidate for a Ballon d'or but I see Hodgson's point. If I was a manager putting together a dream team he'd be one of the first names in my starting XI. Busquets is a better player but perhaps more reliant on a certain system, whereas you could slot Mascherano into any system and he'd still function (aka destroy).
Meanwhile, West Ham v Everton tonight. May the best team win, unless the best team on the night happens to be Everton.
