Hell yeah. But hey- it's Kanye. When does a Kanye guest spot not turn out to be the best track on an album? Ask Rick Ross or Game ... Hell, I only gave Jesus Piece a chance because of how electric Ye's 5 word chorus was.
But I don't think the first half is trash. I think it's refreshing. Tyler's music has been so slow and dirgy and downright fucking plodding and exhausting to listen to. Wolf was infuriatingly simplistic... There was no point in wasting time on such a empty hull of a rap record-- a redundant amusical "fuck"-fest-- in a year defined by convention breaking hip hop masterpieces, and reinventions of classic genre archetypes.
Cherry Bomb has this incendiary horror disco, death synth sound to it that is actually
fun to listen to! For so long I've been worried that OF (particularly Tyler and Earl) would get stuck in the creative quicksand of shock-rap, only to become novelty acts or unkillable cult stars like Insane Clown Posse and Eminem. But Cherry Bomb actually feels like progress. A step away from the thoroughly beaten to death sound of early OF.
I'm still waiting for I Don't Like Shit... to "pop" for me. I'm waiting for a time when listening to someone ejacu-hate assaultive, bleak spitballs over sparse, claustrophobic beats actually sounds like a good idea!
But maybe it will and I'll do an about face of my own. Never know.
