The truth is a truly positive thing, but sometimes, because people live in denial as a general rule, it's not pretty & they often don't weant to hear it.
It's very true also that false compliments are a part of accepted courtesy rituals that are indeed necessary for good manners in a civilized society, but when this etiquette brushes up against the truth, I start to have problems with it because it usually serves to only reinforce the denials of the flatterer & the flattered.
