I had never thought of it quite like that, but yeah, it is kinda like how Pat Boone came out as a "safer" version of Elvis...
The difference, though is that while Green Day's success hinged on that of Nirvana (even Billy Joe Armstrong basically came out and said that when they were on Behind The Music), the band themselves were not manufactured...they were totally DIY in the beginning and I think they deserve and least a little bit of cred for that.
I picked "Basket Case", becuz it reminds me of how I knew this one kid in junior high who was always singing their songs...I would have picked "Welcome To Paradise", but I didn't see it on there, or "Geek Stink Breath", or "Brain Stew" if it had "Jaded" attached to it...
