It is true that the US are very self-absorbed. This is a well known fact... for those outside the US.

But anyways, I read that piece. Touching. I commend you on your efforts.
I also watched a documentary the other night about how the prisoners were left in their cells for a stupid amount of time whilst the water rose around them. Finally they were sent to another prison, but all the paper work and evidence of the inmates was destroyed by flooding, therefore people who had raped or killed someone had no evidence to support that case, which means they could walk free and/or avoid the death penalty. It also meant the people who were only sentenced to 14 days or so for unpaid parking fines could be in there indefinitely. One man had been in there for 6 or so months for unpaid parking fines because they had no clue why he was in there. It was havoc, and the authorities handled it terribly.
