He was an interesting guy. He only took up writing to support his family after illness, if I remember correctly. He spoke something like eight or nine different languages fluently, plus another four or five well , plus the slang one he invented for
A Clockwork Orange.
The Enderby novels are fun,
Earthly Powers (considered by many to be his masterpiece),
Nothing Like The Sun and
Any Old Iron are very good and
A Dead Man In Deptford is possibly his finest piece in my opinion.
He was also a journalist and wrote music. His
Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra in E flat is rather pretty. Alas, I have heard it but have no recording.
