Buholovo, Russia (AHN) - Russian customs officials in Buholovo near the Latvian border have discovered a one mile long pipeline that was pumping vodka to the other side of the border.
Police officers patrolling the border said the tunnel had been laid six feet underground by still unidentified syndicates to pump home-made vodka across the border to avoid paying taxes and other government regulations on the liquor.
The vodka was then sold to Latvian consumers, the police said.
The pipeline was discovered when local community workers started digging holes to plant trees in the area.
Local border police officer, Yakov Kabanov, told the Ananova press agency, "We had our suspicions that there was someone running hooch across the border here but we could never figure out how they managed it.
"They probably would have got away with it for decades if those trees hadn't been planted as well."
Officers are conducting an investigation and began questioning residents in Buholovo about the pipeline, which ran between two rented houses that were empty when they were raided.
