3. Signal your location to maximize the odds that someone finds you. Make noise by whistling or banging rocks together. If you can, mark your location in such a way that it's visible from the air. In sandy areas, mark a triangle in the sand. If you're in a mountain meadow, make three piles of dark leaves in a triangle. In a forest, you may want to prepare three small fires with wet leaves nearby in order to make smoke (but see the precautions below), ready to ignite at a moment's notice, then pile the leaves on for smoke. Starting to see a pattern? Three of anything in the wilderness is a standard distress signal.
