But I think parents do their kids a huge disservice by doing this, well off or not. There's this amazing thing called independence that does wonders for the soul. And as long as you're indebted to your parents for big monetary things, you're never really free of their control.

Nope, I sure did not want my parents to have a thing to do with my life away from home. I would have felt embarrassed to admit to friends that I wasn't paying my own way, for one--it would have been like saying I was still living with my mom and dad. For another, I didn't want my parents to have any presumed right to walk in on me in my apartment--which, believe me, they would have loved to have don--or take away "my" car if they got pissed off at me for some reason, or anything else.
