yes, this all stems from marx's error in thinking that it was capitalism that alienated labor.
in fact it's not capitalism but industrialism that alienates labor, because your work is not consumed by you but goes for distribution into a market. so, soviet factory workers were as alienated from their labor as their western counterparts.
this is of course not my analysis-- i was reading alvin toffler's "the third wave" the other day & he makes it very clear. that book is now 25 years old and as prophetic as ever.
but anyway, yeah, see, the thing is, marx's error was perpetuaded by his fanatic followers. at the time of marx, industrialism was the sole product of capitalism. industrial communism was the same thing, only the products are shittier.
i was watching "goodbye lenin" just the other day and, the funniest of things, the mom is surprised when she's told that the car she requested is on the way, "only after 3 years after she ordered it." of course the car is an antiquated piece of shit. she spends a lot of the time writing petitions to factories so that they change the sizes of the clothing, etc-- when you don't have a free market, you get one kind of shit that fits all, and instead of shopping elsewhere, you have to make petitions. hilarious!
