you know i was a bio major too and did graduate and it seems to me that life is one long continuous uninterrupted chain, in our case alternating between diploid and haploid forms. gametes are very much alive. there is no "beginning". i guess that makes me an idiot?

but anyway, at what point we consider an embryo a "person" and subject to life preservation is another story. for orthodox jews, spilling semen (live cells) in vain is a major religious offence. this includes having sex with barren women.

anyway, blah blah...
