A good way to start is to find an album you like which seems really basic (the first albums by The Ramones, the Stooges or The Misfits for example), learn some TABS for them. You'll get a real sense of achievement making the guitar sound like a song you recognise (and like) which will give you some insentive to carry on learning. The worst thing is to bog yourself down in complex stuff at the beginning so you never feel like you're getting anywhere.
