The mat is to prevent the record from slipping. Sounds to me like your needle is broke or your speaker is blown though.

BTW, I have a leetac player too, if you didn't throw the box out, it has a few extra needles.

Glice, the Leetac player isn't all that bad. For casual listening, it is a nicy portable unit (as portable as a record player can be)
