Just my two pence - having suffered from severe depression myself, I would definitely recommend long-term counselling, with any appropriate medication where necessary - don't be bullied into it by your doctor/GP. Don't be afraid of counselling - it's surprising how much easier it is to share your feelings in that environment. Bear in mind that getting to a better place could take years, but (trust me) it can be done. Don't give up hope.
