"Big Mess" was inspired by a series of letters sent by the personality "Cowboy Kim", believed to be
schizophrenic. The original letters are in the possession of Devo fan Michael Pilmer. The song also shares some thematic content with "I Desire" from the same album. Devo, a band conceived out of the ashes of the Kent State Massacre, was caught-up in a controversy when the story broke that the song's lyrics were taken from letters Hinckley had written to Jodie Foster.
