Ever since I read an article about hearing impairment and music I've been a bit paranoid on the subject.

and you're right to be-- i knew this guy was in a band he was in his 30s i think he couldn't hear out of his left ear. put on those earplugs!

actually there are hifi earplugs especially designed for music, ive never seen them though.
