I'm not sure what you don't believe.
Right on St. Mark's place are a few Yakitori places - little bar-b-q'd things on skewers Japanese style for $2-3 a piece. Get a grilled rice ball and you too can be in Heaven - my fave one there is Oh! Taisho.
In the 30's off of Broadway are a number of Korean restaurants and it's possible to get an awesome meal with a ton of appetizers for under $10. I'm partial to Bibimbap. There's a great restaurant on 33rd called Seoul Garden.
In Chinatown on Doyer's street across from the Post office is the Excellent Pork Chop house. A meal there runs between $5-$10 and it's excellent Taiwanese homestyle cooking.
9th avenue between 42nd and 52nd is probably the best variety of restaurants - the Film Center cafe has an oyster bar, great martinis, and an ecletic mix. Island Burger makes some of the best burgers in the city.
79th street and B'way is Blondie's for the best wings in the city. Also try their smothered waffle fries.
