You asked, I'll answer.
One thing that fascinates me about Dinosaur Jr in their own right is the ability for J's guitar solos and general songwriting to come off as lamenting instead of grandstanding or typically indie rock (not all the time but done well in many songs). Bulbs of Passion, Repulsion, Quest, Little Fury Things, Kracked, Raisons, Lose, No Bones, Let It Ride to name a few. What helps is that Mascis' and Barlow's vocals fit perfectly with the lament and lyrical content.
By the end of Bug, Mascis seems to have pretty much abandoned this style for something different (Keep The Glove, Freak Scene, Pond Song). However, Mascis seems to come back to the lamenting style but rarely (How'd You Pin That One On Me, Out There, Grab It, Back To Your Heart). That and the vocal melodies (in a more general sense) are major reasons that make me lik Dinosaur Jr.
